Explanation

This expression is used to indicate that the subject makes someone else do some behavior, it is formed by adding -게 하다 to the verb stem.

With intransitive verbs 'N1 이/가 N2을/를 V-게 하다' is used, while with transitive verbs 'N1 이/가 N2에게 V-게 하다' is used.

Details

1. When used to indicate the prohibition of some action by somebody, the form 못 -게 하다 is used.

혜수 씨는 아이들이 아이스크림을 안 먹게 합니다. ✕
→혜수 씨는 아이들이 아이스크림을 못 먹게 합니다. ✓
Hyesu doesn't let the children eat ice cream.
언니는 전화할 때는 자기 방에 안들어오게 해요. ✕
→언니는 전화할 때는 자기 방에 못 들어오게 해요. ✓
When my big sister is on the phone, she won't let anyone in her room.

2. Two variants of this expression, -도록 하다 and -게 만들다 can also be used to express the same meaning as -게 하다.

교수님은 학생들에게 책을 읽어 오게 하셨어요.
=교수님은 학생들에게 책을 읽어 오도록 하셨어요.
The professor had the students read
the book (before coming to class).
경민 씨는 아이가 혼자 밖에 못 나가게 했어요.
=경민 씨는 아이가 5자 밖에 못 나가도록 했어요.
Gyeongmin prevented her child from
going outside alone.
은혜 씨는 나틀 웃게 하는 사람이에요.
=은혜 씨는 나를 웃게 만드는 사람이에요.
Eunhye makes me laugh.
