This expression is used when the speaker does an action while in the process of going somewhere.

This expression is also used in the form -는 길이다. In such cases, it indicates that the speaker is in the process of moving from one place to another. Thus, it refers to being in the middle of doing something,

가: 어디 가는 길이에요?
Are you on your way somewhere?
나: 네, 친구 만나러 가는 길이에요.
Yes, I'm on the way to meet my friend.
