1. test; trial
The act of doing something in practice according to a theory or idea, before embarking on a certain task.

2. experimentation; experiment
The act of preparing a certain condition or situation, and observing and measuring the phenomenon in order to study whether a certain theory is right or not, in science.

3. experiment
The act of using a new form or method on a trial basis.
