-느니 -느니 하다 — Saying this and that, Listing various reasons, Claiming A and B

This expression is used when listing a number of thoughts, opinions, or other statements, and it means that the subject has said this and that about some situation or state of affairs. It is also often used together with the citation form -(느)ㄴ다 to form -(느)ㄴ다느니 -(느)ㄴ다느니 하다.

Details

1. This expression can be replaced with -(으)네 -(으)네 하다 with no major change in meaning.

승주 씨는 시장은 복잡하네 환불이 안 되네 하면서 백화점만 간다.

휴가를 가네 마네 하다가 결국 못 가고 말았다.

However, unlike -느니 -느니 하다，-(으)네 -(으)네 하다 cannot be used together with the citation form -(느)ㄴ다.

승주 씨는 시장은 복잡하다네 환불이 안 된다네 하면서 백화점만 간다. ✕

2. This expression can be used with the omission of 하다.

내 남자 친구를 보고 가족들은 키가 작으니 몸이 약해 보이느니 모두들 한마디씩 했다.

의류 사업 진출과 관련해서 직원들은 시장성이 없다느니 다른 의류 회사에 비해 경쟁력이 떨어진다느니 반대 의견을 내놓았다.

3. This expression is also used in the forms of '이니 뭐니/어쩌니 하다' and '-느니 어쩌니 하다', and in such cases, the phrases 뭐니 and 어쩌니 indicate that there are other thoughts, opinions, or statements in addition to the one given immediately in front of 뭐니 or 어쩌니.

민아는 자기가 든 가방이 명품이니 뭐니 하면서 만지지도 못하게 한다.

20년 동안 조연만 맡아 온 이중연 씨는 힘드니 어쩌니 해도 배우로 일할 수 있다는 것에 감사한다고 말했다.

4. This expression is also used idiomaticallly in the forms 어쩌니 저쩌니 해도 and 뭐니 뭐니 해도，in which a specific statement is not given and, as such the expression takes on the meaning of “no matter what others may say.”

뭐니 뭐니 해도 국내 여행지로는 제주도가 최고지요.

사람들이 어쩌니 저쩌니 해도 김 대리만큼 일을 열심히 하는 사람은 없어요.
