This expression is used to indicate that the action or state of affairs in the preceding clause has reached an extreme degree and can no longer be maintained or is growing in intensity.

1. This expression is also used in the form -다 못해 -기까지 하다 to indicate that the degree of something is stronger in intensity.

아침도 못 먹고 점심까지 굶으니까 배가 고프다 못해 쓰리기까지 해요.

그 방은 어찌나 난방이 잘 되어 있던지 따뜻하다 못해 후텁지근하기까지 하데요.

쓰리다: to have a stomachache, to have a burning feeling (in one's stomach)
난방: heating
후텁지근하다: to be humid, to be muggy

2. This expression is used in the form -다 못한 when modifying the following noun. In this case, it mainly attaches to verbs.

토론자들이 막말을 해 대자 보다 못한 사회자가 한마디 했다.

아들이 취업할 생각은 안 하고 놀러만 다니니까 참다 못한 아버지가 아들한테 집을 나가라고 했다.

3. When combining with the verbs ‘참다못해’ and ‘듣다못해’ the words are sometimes written together without a space between them, such as in 참다못해 and 듣다못해. In these cases, 참다못해 is the conjugated form of 참다못하다 and 듣다못해 is the adverb.

인터넷에 떠도는 악성 루머에 시달리던 배우 이정애 씨는 참다 못해/참다못해 사이버 수사대에 수사를 의뢰했다.

4. In the case of the verb 생각하다, both the full form 생각하다 못해 and the shortened form 생각다 못해 can be used.

가: 와, 맛있게 잘 먹었어요. 여긴 음식이 정말 맛있네요. 나: 많이 남기셨는데 좀 더 드시지 그래요? 가: 더 이상은 못 먹겠어요. 너무 맛있어서 계속 먹다 보니 배가 부르다 못해 터질 지경이에요. 나: 여기는 맛도 맛이지만 양도 진짜 많네요. 제가 좀 많이 먹는 편인데 이렇게 먹다 못해 음식을 남긴 건 처음이에요.
