N(으)로 ①

using, with

Explanation

() is also used when expressing means of transport, other means, tools, and materials used to make something. This meaning corresponds to 'by' or 'with/using' and 'from' in English.

Details

When a means of transport is represented by a verb instead of a noun, -아/어서 is added to the verb, such as in 걸어서, 뛰어서, 달려서, 운전해서 and 수영해서.

학교에서 집까지 걸어서 가요.
I go home from school by foot.
서울에서 부산까지 운전해서 갔어요.
I went from Seoul to Busan by driving a car.
부산에서 제주도까지 수영해서 갈 거예요.
I plan to swim (go by swimming) from Busan to Jeju island.

Usage

  • When the word ends in a vowel or , we add after it.

  • When the word ends with a consonant, add 으로 after the word.

(으)로 (Direction) VS 에 (Direction)

The (으)로 particle highlights direction, allowing for the use of terms that indicate directions such as "left, right". This contrasts with the particle, which focuses on the destination element within the sentence. Since "left, right" indicate direction rather than specific destinations, they cannot be used with the particle.
